2013 Writing Life Highlights

You know how you do something and then you do it the next year and then again the following year and now it's a habit? Well, I tend to review my writing year every December 31st and though I'm not really in the mood today, I gotta do it! Just like I have to work out and start my diet tomorrow morning. Ah, tradition. :-) Okay, let's see what happened in 2013.

JANUARY
In January, The Paparazzi Project went to #1 in free teen romance ebooks.

FEBRUARY, MARCH, and APRIL
From February through April I busted my butt cleaning, selling, and packing up our house and we moved to our beautiful new home. When I wasn't doing that I was busily writing and editing, writing and editing, writing and editing, getting ready for a future release.

MAY
In May, Alloy Digital announced the web series, Espressologist, at Digital Content Newsfronts, which was SO cool!. You can read about that here. They included some new details about the script:

"Based on the popular book by Kristina Springer, The Espressologist mixes one part Central Perk from Friends with a splash of Jane Austin’s Emma to create a series brimming with humor and heart.

Working at her neighborhood coffee shop as a barista, twenty-something Chelsea has a front-row seat to people and their crazy, entertaining lives. Always an astute observer of human nature, Chelsea stumbles upon a methodology that makes a love connection between her customers’ personalities and their drink orders. This comedic series follows Chelsea as the stakes are raised and her bizarre dating formula leads to more people (namely friends and co-workers) looking for Chelsea to replicate her success. But will she ever make a match for herself?"

Here's the trailer they presented:

JUNE
In June, I started work on my new *shiny* middle grade book. I'm still working on it and I love it so. :-) I also worked on putting together my library in the new house.

JULY
In July, I went on a writing retreat with the fabulous Author2Author girls to Dublin, OH. So much fun!

AUGUST
In August my friend Deena Lipomi's first published book, BLACK OUT released. (Details here). Not my writing news but Deena and I have been critique partners since 2006 so I was way excited for her!. Check it out on Amazon if you haven't yet.

SEPTEMBER
In September I was a promo queen, getting ready for a new release. Answering a gazillion interviews for a blog tour and ordering promo stuff like these bookmarks.
I'm always willing to send them (and any of my other bookmarks) to readers, libraries etc. so hit me up here or on twitter (@TinaSpringer) and I'll send you some.

OCTOBER
In October, my fifth book BOY SWAP went on sale.

NOVEMBER
In November My Fake Boyfriend is Better Than Yours was still making the rounds at Scholastic Book Fairs. Do you guys know how much I LOVE Scholastic Book Fairs? I so want to get another middle grade with Scholastic. One of my 2014 goals!

The German edition of My Fake Boyfriend is Better Than Yours also came out. Funny enough, the translation of the title is: My totally fictional dream prince is but sweeter than yours.

DECEMBER
In December the paperback of My Fake Boyfriend is Better Than Yours came out and it's sooooo cute!
I love that the Meg Cabot blurb is on the front cover and that there is a good long interview with me in the back (where I tell way too much info) and the first chapter of Just Your Average Princess follows. I'm hosting a release contest on my blog until 1/15/14 here. Lots of goodies, so check it out!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
That's it for 2013. I'm looking forward to a writing-filled 2014, with hopes of completing two middle grade books and a new YA ebook. Wishing you a happy, healthy, & productive new year!

Girlfriends' Cyber Circuit Starring: IN THE BLOOD by Sara Hantz

Girlfriend Sara Hantz stopped by to talk about her newest book, IN THE BLOOD.

About the book:
For seventeen years, Jed Franklin’s life was normal. Then his father was charged with the abuse and murder of four young boys and normal became a nightmare.
His mom’s practically a walking zombie, he’s lost most of his friends, and the press camps out on his lawn. The only things that keep him sane are his little sis; his best friend and dream girl, Summer; and the alcohol he stashes in his room. But after Jed wakes up from a total blackout to discover a local kid has gone missing—a kid he was last seen talking to—he’s forced to face his greatest fear: that he could somehow be responsible.

In a life that’s spiraled out of control, Jed must decide if he chooses his own destiny with Summer by his side or if the violent urges that plagued his father are truly in the blood…

What they are saying:
“Sara Hantz doesn't pull any punches shaping this story of one of the toughest, most complicated family situations that a teen could face. Jed's emotions are raw and real. I ached and raged with him and frantically turned pages to see where he would end up.”  Stephanie Kuehnert, author of Ballads of Suburbia and I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone

“In The Blood is a gut-wrenching look inside the mind of a young man living with a nightmare. Jared has to learn to face life after his father is accused of an unspeakable crime. A ripped-from-the-headlines story that illustrates the power of unconditional love.”  B. A. Binns author of PULL, and Being God

"A dark and deliciously tense story that will make you wonder how alike our parents we can be."  Kelley York author of Hushed.

Our Interview:
Kristina: How did you get the idea for In the Blood?
Sara: If ever I read or watched about some horrific crime committed I would always wonder how it affected the perpetrator’s family and what happened to them. The idea for my book just grew from that.
Kristina: If your book was made into a movie, who would star as your main character?
Sara: Jed: Paul Wesley (although he’s maybe a bit too old),  Summer: Ellen Page
Kristina: Do you prefer reading on an ereader or book in hand?
Sara: Ereader – once I got my Kindle I was a total convert.
Kristina: Who is the Young Adult author that turns you into a fangirl?
Sara: Barry Lyga
Kristina: Would you ever try writing in another genre?
Sara: Yes, I’ve just sold a romantic suspense to Entangled and I’m also working on a New Adult book.

Bio:

Sara Hantz originally comes from the UK and is one of four children, having three younger brothers. Although she was an avid reader from a very early age, she didn't get the writing bug until much later in life, though English was always one of her stronger subjects. She's an avid sun chaser and now lives on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Australia (via 10 years in New Zealand). Sara lectured for many years before deciding to devote more time to her writing and working in the family hospitality business. She has two grown-up children and when not writing, working, or online with her friends, she spends more time than most people she knows watching TV - in fact if TV watching was an Olympic sport she'd win gold. Sara’s books: In The Blood, The Second Virginity of Suzy Green and Will The Real Abi Saunders Please Stand Up (due out May 2014).

Girlfriends' Cyber Circuit Starring: SUPERNATURAL HUNTERS by Kelly Parra

SUPERNATURAL HUNTERS
A novella by Kelly Parra

"Just the right combination of butt-kicking and romance to keep you on the edge of your seat."
- Allison van Diepen, The Vampire Stalker

Supernatural teen hunters and kick-butt couple Jaz and Blake get trouble in their own backyard, the graveyard, when a ghoul is on the loose and looking for fresh meat. When a teen hunter on the verge of death arrives at their doorstep, they realize a much greater evil is upon them.

Jaz is satisfied with their makeshift foster family and fighting monsters, but Blake yearns for adventure and the truth about his biological family. Will Blake leave Jaz to search for something more...and to fend for herself? Can a relationship survive when death is lurking just beyond the gravestones?

SUPERNATURAL HUNTERS (Buzz Books, Oct 2013) is the first novella to follow Jaz and Blake's whirlwind, action-packed romance started in PROM DATES TO DIE FOR and SOMETHING WICKED. With an eye for great dialogue and fight scenes, SUPERNATURAL HUNTERS is a fast-paced, fun read.

OUR INTERVIEW
Kristina: How did you get the idea for (title of book)
Kelly: I’m actually very bad at titles. Only two have stuck. Buzz Books titled SUPERNATURAL HUNTERS for me.

Kristina: Would you ever try writing in another genre?
Kelly: Definitely, I’m an avid reader and I enjoy young adult, paranormal, women’s fiction, and suspense. I am also published in Romantic Suspense.

Kristina: Who are the Young Adult author that turns you into a fangirl?
Kelly: Love Rachel Caine, Sarah Dessen, Cassandra Clare, and Tina Ferraro.

Kristina: What is your most favorite (or, weirdest, craziest, funniest, most touching etc.) comment you’ve received from a fan?
Kelly: The one comment I’ve heard over and over have been from reluctant readers who have said my novel GRAFFITI GIRL was the first book they’ve ever completely finished. Its humbling and amazing to have heard this.

Kristina: Do you prefer reading on an ereader or book in hand?
Kelly: Both. Love paperbacks, however, bed time reading works best with my ereader.
